Querying / Submitting to a database

Hello - Very new to InfoPath - In at the deep end! I am trying to learn from
a book but something just isn't clicking.

For a purchace ordering form - I have been asked to see if it is posible to
get the MAX(number)+1 from a database field and display it on a form when the
form is opened. Then insert this number as a new record into the same table.
