Question for users of WW date format

Greg

If you use the WW date format(e.g. w5/1), have you noticed
that MS Project doesn't correctly handle W53 which occurs
this year? It shows all dates in w53 '03 as being in
w1 '04, which throws off all dates in 2004 by one week
(later). The Gantt bars show the correct date, but the
Start/Finish columns do not.

I'm trying to develop a workaround for this problem that
still uses the WW date format. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,

Greg

Greg,

I guess it's all a matter of definition.

Curious about this (and remembering my experience with the so-called
Yr2k "bug"), I took at an "authoritative source" (if there is such a
thing): my Collins (UK) diaries for 2003 and 2004 where week numbers are
defined.

2003 Week 52 is shown to start on 22 December, and there is no Week 53.
They start Week 1 in 2004 on 29th December 2003. 2004 has 53 weeks
defined.

Looking closer at how this was established, it seems that they pick the
year for which has the majority of days. 2004 Week 1 has 4 of 7 days in
2004...so it's Week 1 in 2004 and not Week 53 in 2003. 2004 Week 53 has
4 of 7 days in 2004, so it's in 2004 and not Week 1 of 2005.

Rob,

Thank!

Do you know where I could get a copy of those 2003/2004
Collins diaries?
It's looking like the people at our company that put
together our corporate calendar screwed up...

Greg,

These diaries are easily available in UK...don't know about USA
availability. http://www.collinsdebden.com/

Week numbers is in common use in Europe. Took a long time for me to get
my head around talking about week numbers as opposed to dates for "week of".

I can scan a few of the relevant pages from my diary and email them to
you if this would help.

There are a number of ways to figure the workweek. Generally the weeks are
not calculated from the end, but rather the beginning of the year.
For example ww1 can be the week that contains Jan 1, or it can be the first
full week that contains Jan 1 or it can be the first week which contains Jan
1 and has more than half the days in the new year. How this is done
determines where a "filler" week like ww53 would fall.
