Umm, not quite. PWS is the lite version of IIS 4 originally for running on
workstations. It was used in FP 98 as you correctly point out but it is
originally for NT workstations. By the time Windows 98 came out it was
available on your Windows 98 cd completely independent of FrontPage or you
could download it as part of the NT Service Pack 4 (or something like that).
If you installed the FP 2000 Server Extensions on FP 98 you could publish to
it with FP and test your FP components. I did that because I've never been
a fan of Disk Based Webs.
Primary differences between PWS and IIS is what level of asp they support.
PWS supports ASP 2.0 while IIS 5 (on W2k Pro) or IIS 5.1 (XP Pro) support
ASP 3.0 and how the web server is managed. On XP Pro you use the IIS
management console which I find much easier to use than the old PWS
interface.
Whether you are using PWS or IIS you can find your local webs at either
http://localhost or
http://name_of)_your_computer.

PWS on with FP 98 and IIS are entirely different.
PWS was used by 98 so FPExplorer and FPEditor
could "communicate" with each other.
Later versions of FrontPage do not nead this feature,
and IIS is actually a web server you can "publish" your
web to and allow others to see it, and also for testing purposes
for features that require FrontPage extensions installed on a server.
In later versions of FrontPage, open FrontPage and click File > Open Web
and navigate to the location of your web on the machine,
or type in
http://yourwebname.com if it is a "live" version.

I use to use PWS whe nI ran Win 98. Now using Windows XP Pro. My
understanding is the IIS does the same thing as PWS. If so, how exactly do I
useit? I installed it, but then what do you do to open my local web as if
it were on the server for help with debug. I think part of my problem is, I
haven't used PWS in over a year, so can't exacly recall how I use to start
the web up there either.
