Question On Office 2007 and systems slowing down in response time

Adam Raff

Good Day,

I have noticed after installing Office 2007 that the systems seem to slow
down a little. Like the response time.

We are running Exchange 2003 SP2 and all systems have Windows XP SP2.
Outlook is open most of the time and really never closed on our systems.
Most of the systems have about 512 to a gig of ram with decent CPU speed.

What I am noticing is that the mouse seems to be slow in responding when you
click on something or it seems that the overall system just seems sluggish.

Has anybody else seen this and if so are there any fixes.

I have seen on this site that if you upgrade this may cause a slow down but
in our situation I would rather not do a clean install if at all possible.

Thanks

Hi Adam,

Office 2007 requires more system resource than any previous versions of
Office. I also noticed that your machine seems to have been working for a
long time. So I would like to suggest you restart your computer and see if
this slow performance issue still persists.

Meanwhile, try to close some IE windows or kill some background processes
which do not affect your working may return back some system resources such
as memory and low down CPU usage. This may help to improve your whole
system performance.

You can check your currently CPU Usage and PF Usage in Windows Task
Manager. (Right-click on the blank place of system taskbar and click Task
Manager). Click Processes tab>End Process to end up some unused background
processes.

Alternatively, for this slow performance issue, your local CSS would be a
better place to contact:

Hi Leon,

Thanks for the reply and your insight in this matter.

The system that I am running is a P4 3.0 with a gig of ram which should be
more than enough power for this product.

In my instance it seems that I have to double click more than once on
everything like my CPU is running at 100% or high. I have had my task
manager open to see my CPU usage and nothing hits that high.

I have updated my Mouse, keyboard and video drivers to the latest just to
rule them out.

The same thing is still happening and I have rebooted at least three times
this week with the same issues.

I have now installed this on a few other systems as we are doing a slow roll
out and I am getting the same response from others as well just a general
slowdown in their systems. If a P4 3.0 with a gig of ram is not enough for
this software then it seems that a lot of people are going to have a lot of
problems if it's a resource issue.

I do not think in this case that is the problem something is eating up the
resources of the computers and not just mine but others.

Can you recommend any way of indentify the resources that are in use. Again
I never had this type of issue until we started installing Office 2007.

Thanks

Hi Adam,

A slow performance may caused by many reasons. Because almost the whole
system is involved, I recommend you to contact your local CSS for help.

numbers and information about support costs, please go to the following

Alternatively, if you wish to go on working with me, I would be glad to
provide my suggestions as below:

* Suggestion:
============

Please first perform a Safe Mode in Windows XP by following the steps
below. At least from the result of this Safe Mode test can we see if it is
caused by the network problem.

1. Restart Windows.
2. At the boot sequence, long press F8 key to invoke startup menu.
3. Choose Safe Mode on the menu and press Enter.
4. After Windows starts in Safe Mode, determine if this issue still
persists.

If this issue does not occur in Safe Mode, then please perform a clean boot
to solve this issue:

1. Click Start>Run, type "msconfig" in the Open box (without the quotation
marks), and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then clear the Process
System.ini File, Process WIn.ini File, and Load Startup Items check boxes.
You cannot clear the Use Original Boot.ini check box.
3. On the Services tab, select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box,
and then click Disable All.
4. Click OK, and then click Restart to restart your computer.
5. After Windows starts, determine whether the symptoms still occur.

If it works fine after Windows clean boot, please obtain the detailed
troubleshooting steps in our KB article:

310353 How to perform a clean boot in Windows XP

Hope this helps!

I experience the same sluggish performance on Vista (running Aero Glass or
not).

The extra problem I have is when I come back to computer after it locks out,
Outlook looses its form. It is hard to explain, but in one example the email
message's body moves to the top left corner of the message form. You can no
longer see the Send button and other parts of the message. I have also seen
the Outlook window dissapear. I know it was still there, because I selected
Move from the taskbar and the cursor appeared to move it as usual (even
though I couldn't see it moving). The folder list was distorted earlier this
morning and I was able to resize the window, even though the form never
moved. I had to grab the line from its new spot when I resized it back
(rolling to find the double error cursor).
