Question on Task type in MS project 2007

Merry

Hi,
I have set "Default task type" in Options as Fixed Work. But when I enter an
Approved project, in Task Information > Advanced, the Task type is still
Fixed Units. Suppose it should be Fixed Work, right?

Why it happens like that?

Thanks
Merry

Two questions:

1. Where did you set the Fixed Work option? In a new project or in the
Enterprise Global file?
2. What do you mean by an Approved project? Do you mean you converted a
Proposal to an enterprise project? Or something else?

Let us know and we will try to help.

Hi Howard,
A1: I set the Fixed Work in MS Project 2007, which installed in my PC. From
menu Tools > Options.
A2: The Approved project means the idea is approved by our management team,
then the project is converted from proposal to an enterprises project by EPM
admin.

Thanks,
Merry

Your answer to #2 is the source of the problem. When you convert a Proposal
to an enterprise project, the system uses the Fixed Units task type, and I
do not know of any way around this. The Task Type value you selected is
applied only on new blank projects that you create. Hope this helps.

Hi Howard,
I agree with you, for any new project I create on my PC, the task type will
be Fixed Work. I tried this before.
But in fact our EPM Admin had asked all project owners to set task type to
Fixed Work in MS Project 2007. So I don't think it is reasonable, they still
covert project plan by using Fixed Units.

Best,
Merry

In the early design stages of Project Server 2007, Proposals were originally
called Lightweight Projects. Microsoft made a decision in these Lightweight
Projects to set the Task Type as Fixed Units. I don't work for Microsoft
and I didn't design Project Server 2007, so the best I can offer you is the
truth about how it works, even if your EPM doesn't like it. I think your
EPM Admin now needs to teach your PMs how to convert each newly-converted
Proposal to Fixed Work by doing the following:

1. Open the newly-converted Proposal in Project Professional 2007.
2. Click the Select All button to select all tasks in the enterprise
project.
3. Click the Task Information button on the Standard toolbar.
4. Select the Advanced tab.
5. Set the Task Type value to Fixed Work and click the OK button.
6. Save the project.

Hope this helps.

Hi Howard,
That is really helpful.
But does that mean, our EPM Admin's request that ask all project owner to
change the default task type to Fixed Work is useless?

Thanks,
Merry

Your EPM Admin's request is useless only for Proposals that are converted to
enterprise projects. It is useful for any new project created from a blank
project. So, it is SOMEWHAT useful! :)

Another possible solution could be to use some VBA code to 'force' the Task Type to Fixed Work. It's not to difficult to write a little VBA code to set the Task Type to Fixed Work using the 'Project Open' event for all tasks in the project. Drawback of this method is that the VBA code will ALWAYS force all tasks to Fixed Work, so you cannot use any other task type any more (unless you add some more business logic in your VBA code).
