Question re Office Mac 2004 Student & teacher

I want to install Office Mac 2004 on my iBook. My iBook is crowded up
with applications and I am wondering if it will be possible to install
only the parts of Office that I intend to use: Word and Power Point. I
have no use for Entourage, Excel, or Messenger. Can I pick and choose
or am I stuck with the whole package? I don't want to begin the install
without being clear about this. Also, are there other things I should
know about compatability before I install?

When you insert your Office install disk, you will see two items. One of
them is the Microsoft Office 2004 folder, which you can simply drag into
your Applications folder. This procedure is known as a standard install,
i.e. it installs Office in its entirety (all the programs). And that's why
you should use the Office Setup Assistant instead, which allows you to make
a custom install. During step 5 of the installation process, you will be
given the option to install only certain components of the Office suite, and
that's where you can choose to install Word and PowerPoint only.

Another thing you should probably know before installing Office: make sure
the Office Test Drive is no longer on your hard disk, as it is known to
interfere with the full version in the strangest ways imaginable. Use the
Remove Office application in the Test Drive folder (if there is such a
folder on your iBook), run it, then move the Test Drive folder to the trash
if it's still in your Applications folder. After you've done that, it should
be pretty safe and easy to install Word and PowerPoint.

You might find that future updates will be problematic if you remove some of
the applications. A Get Info shows that Entourage is 10.7 MB, Excel 14.6 MB,
Messenger 22.5 MB. I would look to other ways to reduce clutter on your
drive.

Check out WhatSize (freeware) WhatSize is a simple tool that allows the user
to quickly measure the size in bytes of a given folder and all subfolders
and files within it.
