Hi all,

I am a complete newbie to web design but I have been in computers since I
was 10 yrs old so it all comes very easy to me. Plus I somewhat of an
artist and Photographer. I was going to get into Digital Imaging but have
decided to look into web design instead. I only want to start it as a hobby
and see where it takes me in my spare time. I believe there is more promise
in this industry.

My questions are:

1. Will FP 2003 allow me to design some nice looking sites or will it just
give me the basics?

2. Do I need to learn any code? I know some HTML but that is it. I
haven't a clue about any of these other web languages? How many are there?
What are the differences? So much going on nowadays.

3. Any good books on FP 2003 for complete beginners that people have bought
or used. There's so many I haven't a clue what to get.

4. Would it interest me to learn Imagready on PS 7.0 as well. I am pretty
good with Photoshop.

5. Where should I start?

thanks.

I plan to be around this newsgroup quite a bit. Alot of good information
here. I cannot believe I just came across it now.

Why not try FrontPage 2003 for free online (broadband recommended)
Go to http://www.runaware.com/microsoft/frontpage2003/

You don't have to, but it's highly recommended you learn HTML and CSS

Hi Bacchus,
1. Will FP 2003 allow me to design some nice looking sites or will it just
give me the basics?

An HTML page is a text document. The browser renders it according to the
text markup. Therefore, even NotePad will allow you to design some nice
looking sites. FrontPage has many tools to help you create your web sites
rapidly, without having to hand-code your HTML, and supports a number of
server-side programming technologies as well.
2. Do I need to learn any code? I know some HTML but that is it. I
haven't a clue about any of these other web languages? How many are there?
What are the differences? So much going on nowadays.

A web site can be an application as well. It can incoporate client-side (in
the browser) and server-side programming of various sorts, to create dynamic
web applications and pages. To create a static HTML document, HTML alone can
be sufficient, although a good knowledge of CSS will improve your design
abilities greatly. JavaScript is used quite frequently on the client, so it
is probably the second-most important technology to learn. And if you want
to create full-blown server-side web applications, you can learn VBScript
for ASP, or VB.Net/C# for ASP.Net, Perl for CGI, Cold Fusion, JSP, and a
bunch of other server-side programming technologies and languages.
3. Any good books on FP 2003 for complete beginners that people have bought
or used. There's so many I haven't a clue what to get.

I can't help you there. It's been years since I bought a book on FrontPage.
However, the Microsoft web site has plenty of free stuff online to help you
learn.
4. Would it interest me to learn Imagready on PS 7.0 as well. I am pretty
good with Photoshop.

If you want to create/edit your own images, yes.
5. Where should I start?

Looks to me like you already have! :)

thanks for your help Kevin. Great help.

I am going to go over the basics of HTML and use my Rogers Web space to
experiement. Then I will educate myself with some of these different
languages you spoke of. CSS sounds good to know and Javascript. This will
all take place beforer I even touch any software.

thanks

the idea behind frontpage is no, you don't need to know the HTML coding. But it
helps if you do know the basics (like you've mentioned).....of course creating a
"good" site is only going to be as good as your design skills allow, and depends
on what you want to make.

Frontpage comes with ready made page templates (such as a feedback form or photo
gallery) and themes which have predesigned themes incorporating background
image/colours, button graphics, horizontal line graphics

The themes use graphics and stylesheets to create the different designs. YOu
apply these to your web to make use of them.

I believe with Photoshop these days you can actually design a page and export it
as HTML in sliced tables and so on.....if your skills in PS are of a high
standard you're halfway there.

FP is just another tool to make it 'easy' for you to put together a site in a
relatively quick time.
