Questions about the Table of Contents

M

Marina P.

I am brand new to TOC. I use it for my doctoral thesis. When I update the
TOC big chunks of text appear sometimes in additions to the headings. Any
idea why this happens and how I can avoid it?

Is it simpler to use TOC in the end for the whole thesis or can I use it as
I work on different chapters and then put them together. Will that create
confusion?

Any recommendations for a good tutorial?

Thanks, M.

Start with http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html and then come
back with specific questions. The problems you're having with getting too
much text in the TOC might be explained at
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/TOCTips.htm and
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/RunInSidehead.htm

If you're creating each chapter as a separate file (not necessary or even
desirable, by the way), I wouldn't advise putting a TOC in each file unless
you are wanting to have a TOC for each chapter at the beginning of the
chapter, in which case you can follow the instructions for a partial TOC at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/TOCSwitches.htm
