Quick Access Toolbar in Office 2007 and Roaming Profiles

Y

Yuri NLD

Hi,

I just found this community and realized my post should be here.
(this post is also somewhere else, my excuse for that)

I have exact the problem as described here, so I just post the link:
http://www.itexperience.net/2008/03/13/quick-access-toolbar-in-office-2007-and-roaming-profiles/
http://www.technologyquestions.com/...ce-2007-roaming-qat-quick-access-toolbar.html

Microsoft should be aware of this, right?!
It looks a small enhancement to write the settings to:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Office
Instead of: C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Office

The goal of this post is to reach Microsoft so that they are able to route
this information internally to the right department.

Or, ofcourse, when somebody else has a solution where I do not:
- have to keep cached roaming profiles on the local Terminal Server
- have to make my own scripts at logon and logoff
it's welcome!

Best regards,
Yuri

Hi Yuri,

The Office 2007 Quick Access Toolbars (QAT), out of the box,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926805?FR1
were not intended to roam. There have been some methods to implement a roaming effect, including among those, ones you listed.

By default, the .qat files are saved in the following locations:

On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003:
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Office

On Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Office

There is now a Microsoft hotfix available to add support for QAT roaming
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958062?FR=1

Once the hotfix is in place, and the registry settings mentioned are completed, the .qat files then saved in a new, roaming
supported location,
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Office

I have an issue with the referenced KB article.

1st I have tried to apply the hotfix on a fully patched O2007 running on
Vista but it after checking it responds saying that it is not needed. The
MSO.DLL file does have the same version number (but slightly different date)
as the one listed in the KB, so it maybe that it is already been patched by
an Offcie Update

2nd The registry key still doesn't make the QAT roam.

Any suggestions as to what is going on?

Neil
PS there is a mistake in the KB text as it lists the location of QAT within
Vista as already being in the user's Roaming area. I wish! ;-)

Hi Neil,

If you create/save a change to a QAT in, for example, Word 2007, after adding the registry changes and search for Word.QAT after
closing Word, is that .QAT file now in more than one location, if not, what location is it now stored in?

The location of the .QAT files should be in ones that are part of the roaming profile area.

It still gets created in the local folder. Even if you have deleted the QAT
file before starting Word or Excel

Hi Bob,

Thank you very much for your reply!
The hotfix worked!

After the hotfix installation I forced the required registry setting to all
users by a KIX loginscript:

$Check =
KeyExist("HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Toolbars\My-Check")
IF $Check = 0

WriteValue("HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Toolbars","QuickAccessToolbarRoaming","00000001","REG_DWORD")
AddKey("HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Toolbars\My-Check")
ENIF

I have one script for all users so I'm a happy man!

One more question since this appeared to be an easy one ;-)
My users also complain they loose their History in Internet Explorer.
Is there a same kind of patch for IE7?

Best regards,
Yuri
