Nonalphanumeric Character-Challenged

The numbers and letters on my keyboard are fine. However, I have trouble
with so-called non-alphanumeric characters. For example, when I type a colon
: followed by a closed parentheses ) and press the space bar I get a squiggle
that, when I go onto a more advanced computer, shows up as a smiley face.
There is a mild workaround to this (which I won't bother explaining) but my
underlying question is: what could be causing Word to be acting in such a
complicated manner?

Here's another nonalphanumeric problem I have:
When I send e-mails with apostrophes or quotation marks sometimes the
recipient's browser can't read them and translates them as little gray
squares where the punctuation should be.

And here's something of a wildcard that relates to nonalphanumeric characters:
Only on eBay do I have a problem doing searches on Web sites using quotation
marks or minus signs, which may be a totally different issue.

Thanks for your help.

The first is caused by AutoCorrect. If you don't want these conversions to
be made, go to Tools | AutoCorrect and delete the relevant entries.

The second is caused by AutoFormat As You Type, where you can disable the
"smart quotes" option.
