quotation marks misbehaving -- what's the fix?

Robert Conrad

I'm running Office X on a new iMac with Panther OS. Whenever I use
quotation marks, the opening set is forced into a subscript position,
down on the baseline. The closing set is in the normal superscript
position where it ought to be. Argh! What's the fix? I've played with
resetting all of the options that I can think of. What's the fix?
Thanks!

Hello Robert,

Some questions to clarify, before we attempt an answer:

Does this happen only in one document, only in blank new documents, or in
all documents?

Does it happen with single and double quotation marks alike? Do you have
"smart quotes" on in Tools menu -> AutoCorrect -> AutoFormat as you Type?

What happens when you type only a quotation mark with a space either side?

Finally, do you have a non-English (US) language setting in your system
preferences?

several days after the first response comes in. Sometimes it takes a few
responses before the best or complete solution is proposed; sometimes you'll
be asked for further information so that a better answer can be provided.
