Quoting problem

Hi, folks.

I've recently taken over as the moderator of our neighborhood mailing
list. One of our long-time subscribers uses Entourage (User-Agent:
Microsoft-Entourage/11.4.0.080122 - is that 2004?) and her messages
always appear as though her own (new) text is part of the quoted
message she's replying to. For instance:

***begin example***
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
I am not a computer guru---my quotes come out as numbers....it is nothing= I
do...sorry=20
=20=20
=20
What's with the superscript 3 etc? Secret code?
=20
Fred, using plain English.
***end example***

As you can see, her reply is quotated at the same level as the message
she's replying to.

In addition, it appears that Entourage is using some nasty non-ascii
characters even in the plain-text version of her message. (Our group
is set to strip any non-text portions, including HTML mime sections).

Her saying she's not a guru is somewhat of an understatement, but I
would like to try to help her get this sorted out so that her
contributions to the list don't get skipped because they're too hard
to parse.

Unfortunately, I have never seen, let alone used, Entourage, so I
thought I'd ask here if someone could suggest where to start looking.

Thanks.

Yes, this is Entourage 2004. It's not the newest version, but it's updated
enough to get the major fixes. 11.5.1 is the last update for Office 2004.

Ask her to take a screenshot of the Entourage preferences "Compose". In
addition, under the preference for "Read" make sure she has Western European
(ISO) selected.

You can send that to the list using ImageShack or send it to me off list. I
can subscribe to the list to see what is happeninG.

You can post a screenshot link using a service like ImageShack. ImageShack

To answer some of your questions:

yes, anything with 11.x as the version number is Entourage 2004. Entourage
always truncates lines after 75 characters, so some of the rather ugly
breaks are caused by Entourage itself. That being said, your subscriber
could simply select and right-click a paragraph to clean up the selection
using one of the options available in the contextual menu. Also, could she,
by accident, be typing in lines which start with the quotation symbol ">"?
In this case, it would be normal for her answer to look the way it does.
