Random Crashes While Converting Wordperfect Docs to Word

Okay I just started a new job and part of my work involves converting Word
Perfect files to MS Word. So far this has been quite successful with no
problems. The last few files I've worked on, however, have been problematic.
All I've basically had to do is open each Word Perfect file in Word, make
some formatting adjustments and save as a Word document and move on to the
next file. With these latest few, though, I've gotten to various points in
the document - it's never at a particular spot - and suddenly a message pops
up indicating that Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and has to shut
down. It recovers my work, but I am unable to continue where it left off
because it will shut down the moment I try anything. Today it has happened
twice in the same document, at two different points. At the point I last
worked on the document a series of Ys with umlauts above them and points of
elipses between shows up. I asked a co-worker his opinion and he asked me to
print out the page to see if the strange lettering shows up. The page printed
out normally.

Does anyone have any possible clue what might be happening?
