Josh-

Can you tell me what platform the document that you describe was
created on? From the sounds of your mail, the spreadsheet was created
in 2001. Are you still using 2001, or have you upgraded to 2004?
Are you only using Mac's or is there some transferring going on
between Mac's & PC's?
Can you repro this from scratch?
What type of formatting is being used in the document?

I haven't seen this before so hopefully I can help you sort this out.
