Random Internal Server Error 500

50% plus of the time when I publish I get an "Internal server error 500".
What does this error mean? Why should I get it at random? How is this
fixed?

If it is happening on your live/remote hosted site, you have to contact your web host as it is an
issue with their server.

Thanks for the response, but I would still like to know what causes this
error. I assume that it's documented somewhere...

It is not a specific thing... it is a failure or invalid request, etc.

So how does one debug this error since it appears that it can be caused by
a large number of things?!?

You check the server logs - the webserver logs including the error log
and, in the case of a Windows server, the event logs. This can only
be done on the server.
