Random Read-Only files

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

Word and Excel files are appearing as read-only 2 out of 3 times they are opened by users.

We have a mixed environment of Office 2004 and 2008 with all files on a central server (Xserve). Files are saved in .doc and .xls format for compatibility with external contractors.

The problem is entirely random with the number of active users or frequency of file access having no effect on the outcome. Has anyone else seen this behaviour?

Yeah, we have heard several reports of this. I am afraid *I* don't have the
details of it, other than the fact that it is issues with the networking
protocols.

I'll ask some of our tame Sys Admins if they can remember what it is, and
keep Googling the Apple forums. Someone said there was a bug in SMB ...

Cheers
