a Project Manager needs to assign me as a resource in a project. The problem
is that I am higher up the RBS than the PM, which means they are unable to
see me in the available resources. Is there an easy way round this without
changing my RBS position?

Why don't you open the project and assign yourself to the project
team? They can then open the project and you will be a member of the
project team that they can assign as needed.

James, thanks, I have done that since i posted, but it could become a pain
going forward if i am needed on multiple projects. I was hoping there might
be an answer that would solve this for future instances.
thanks anyway

I understand what you are saying and I don't know what the best answer
for you is. I will offer up this piece of (slightly related) advice:
many people want the RBS to have the same structure and hierarchy as
the company org chart. It doesn't necessarily need to look like that.
If you are the PM's manager, but are also acting as a resource for the
PM's there may be a structure that would put you under them in the RBS
that might make sense.

On the other hand, there may not be such a structure, as users can
only be in one place on the RBS, but it's a thought.

It is one of those situations where the RBS doesn't strictly represent the
business hierarchy. I am the MS Project Administrator, so I sit above most
people in the RBS, but I can also be used as a resource by them in certain
projects. If I was only adminstering PWA, it wouldn't be an issue, but
because I am currently required to update projects or do training for people,
I need to sit at a higher RBS level.
Thanks for your response - I will let you know if i find a way round it!

That situation might make it easier. You could be given blanket
rights, such as the Admin group, or a customized limited admin group
if that is not appropriate and then your RBS value won't affect your
permissions.

There is a solution to this problem. Create a custom Category called
something like "Top Level Resources" or something like that. In this
Category, add the names of the people who are higher than the PM's in the
RBS code, but who need to be available for project work. Add the Category
to the Project Managers group and set the same Category permissions as the
My Projects category in the Group. This will make those resources appear
like magic in the Build Team dialog. Hope this helps.
