Hi Reza

RBS- Resource Breakdown Structure is an important element in Project Server
security model and it helps define reporting relations between resources in
an organization.

For.e.g The default permissions in Project Server 2007 allow members of the
Project Managers group to see all of the resources in the Enterprise Resource
Pool.
If you need to restrict your PMs to see only those resources who report to
them you will need to create and map a proper RBS structure.

Generally the organization structure is mapped to the RBS and create
permissions.
Ofcourse if the org structure is crptic and changes quite often then
maintaining permissions using RBS can be a very difficult task.

Hi Manmeet Chaudhari

Thanks for your quick response....
according with u said below: "If you need to restrict your PMs to see only
those resources who report to them you will need to create and map a proper
RBS structure.". Can you direct me how to set like this?
i want PMs can see only for their resources in project, and also i want
functional manager can view their resources who involve in some projects.

i create my RBS like this....what do you think, need your opinion?
is this right? if wrong could you write the right one?

Structure in my company like this:
Director
Senior Manager
Dev Manager
Dev Staff
CMA Manager
PMO Staf
PM Team
Team member
Finance Manager
etc

so many thanks for you help....

For what it is worth - I had our IT group write a script that synchs with our
HR db (Oracle) to populate the RBS. I was trying to maintain this manually as
you list below - but it was impossible with a organizaiton of 450+ that keeps
restructuring who reports to whom.

Plus - I found that when editing manually - I just caused persmissions
issues as user synchs would fail if you try to do more then 1 at a time. MS
told me that this was to be fixed in the Oct cum patch -- it isn't. So I had
to watch the queue till each one finish. A complete waste of my valuable
time :)

The HR synch also populates - location, cost center, base calendar (derived
by location), earliest available date, a custom field we added for resource
manager and the RBS.

The RBS field now shows from the CEO name, VP Name, Dir Name, Manage Name,
Employee.

Your structure is fine, but I would add, this is again for seeing and using
resources, but you should also consider permissions within these levels.

At the highest level you have Executive role, then at the head of org should
be Portfolio and Resource Manager roles, in a matrix org, you can have these
individuals share resources via Build Team to get people assigned into other
groups.

So dont look at this as people only as much as roles also. So at the lowest
level, team members have only team member and project managers only project
manager. At the level of Dev, CMA, Finance their needs to be those
Portfolio/Resource Manager and even possibly a custom Baseliner role
depending on your processes. But at the Senior Manager level this individual
will need to see and share resources across the other groups on matrix
projects, so this may not be one individual but possibly their assistant
handling this housekeeping activities, otherwise it all falls to the
Administrator who can see all to share resources.

It's great that your IT group saw the wisdom in this. By far, this is one of
the first points of integration that should be considered when managing a
large resource pool in an organization that constantly reorgs itself.
