re-import old messages into Entourage after crash?

Basically, since Entourage kept quitting on startup, I followed MS's
directions and created a new "main identity." Great, Entourage works fine
now, but all my old messages are gone!

I know where they are, though--in my old "Main identity" folder in a file
called "Messages"--98 MB of them. I tried replacing the "Messages" file in
my new main identity folder with my old "Messages" file, but Entourage still
only shows one message in the inbox!

"Import" won't let me import the old "Messages" file. I can't drag and drop
it in. When I double click on it all I get is Entourage opening.

How can I retrieve all those messages (and the email addresses in them!)

Thanks in advance

You could try dragging your Messages and Database file from the old identity
to the new identity. However, you'll might then end up with the crashing
problem you had before.

If that happens, you can try rebuilding the database. Quit Entourage, and
then restart Entourage holding down the Option key. When the Rebuild dialog
box comes up, choose to do a Typical Rebuild.

If that doesn't work, you're probably out of luck. You could try opening
your Messages file in a text editor and salvaging data, but that's about the
end of the road.
