Re-install Office 2004 Upgrade

I have just migrated all my applications (using migration assistant) to
my new iMac DC and found a Test Drive Office 2004. I already had a
licenced version running and this was migrated successfully. Now I have
been advised to remove both the Test Drive AND my original licenced
copy using both remove office applications, and then re-install Office
2004 from the original CD.
My Office 2004 CD is an upgrade, as are my previous CD's from v.X back
to Office 98 (the original full purchase). By removing Office 2004 on
my hard drive and then running the upgrade CD, will this work?
I have all the product keys and licence numbers.

Will what work, exactly? Anyhow, when you run the Office 2004 upgrade
installer, it will ask you to point it toward a previous version. Most
people have reported here that you can simply put the older CD into the
drive and point it at that, no actual previous installation needed.

Your Office 98 would qualify you for the upgrade, so you can just use that
CD if you like--however, I'm quite sure that someone here has reported they
had no problem with using an upgrade version to qualify another upgrade
version. The installer doesn't seem to go back down the chain.

Why have you been advised to remove both the Test Drive and the current
installation?

If because you think that's how the remover works, someone else said:

However, I was rather surprised to find that out, no one else has mentioned
it.

If you are removing to sort out problems, then starting out totally fresh
might be the best idea, and there are other best practice tips here:

For what reason? Removing the Test Drive should be all that is
necessary unless you are having problems with the full version - which
can't be determined for sure until the Test Drive is removed.

Once you remove Test Drive, empty the Trash, use Disk Utility to Repair
Disk Permissions, & you may need to log out/in to see how the full
version plays.

Even if there are problems with the full version, reinstalling software
on the Mac is seldom the cure for ill-behaved software. If you have any
issues with the full version once the Test Drive is removed someone
will certainly help you resolve the problem.
