Re keyboard merging

I am in the process of migrating from WordPerfect to
Microsoft Word 2002. My question is this. I only require
to merge from my keyboard and have the document stop at
various parts of the document prompting me to insert text
from my keyboard. Is this possible in Word or not. In
word perfect it is quite easy. Also I cannot work out how
to insert merge fields into my document (I don't
understand how to do it) can someone please help a new
user and giv an example how to insert the corect merge
field step by step.
