Sloan, Chad, It took me a while to re-try, so I re-posted.
I added the main 3 components separately of the SP1
update with no problem. But again when I applied SP1 I
got the same blue screen. The error message on event
viewer was:

It certainly looks like a registry problem, but my
expertise ends here, I'm not sure how to correct it, I've
already tried re-installing XP and Registry Mechanic made
things worse. I'm thinking a whole new installation is
my only hope, I reckon, the registry problem is probably
with non-XP related components.
Any ideas ?
did a SP1 re-apply to recreate the error

Thanks guys !
Chad you're right, my MSO was in a fold-out and it did
have One Note - which I haven't bothered with - but will
now. I did search this message board and did notice that
many people are having problems with SP1, however none
have had blue screens. I have a nasty feeling that
Sloan's right, but I'll check the logs as suggested and
get back.
Thanks !!
