Re use of License number

Hi,
We recently upgraded a pc from 2000 to XP, in doing so,
the Office XP that was group licensed, was lost and we had
to use a new number to put it back on after upgrading. How
can I get the credit back for the one we wiped out?

Credit for what? You are still using the same number of licences. The
"number" you used to install it is immaterial.

I own more licenses than I've used (we purchase them in
advance of need, in groups) I used a completely new
license to put on the XP operating system, the same
machine already had another license from before, but we
didn't know how to identify it prior to putting XP over
the 2000 operating system. So actually that one pc has
made use of 2 licenses.
