Read Mail Synchronization with Exchange 2003

I am not sure if this problem is with Exchange or Outlook, so I am
crossposting to both groups. I am running an Exchange 2003 Standard
Edition server at work. On my work computer I am running Outlook 2003
and at home Outlook 2007 (before that Outlook 2003). Everything has
been working with no problems for a couple of years. Both computers
synchronize with Exchange perfectly. But, recently, when I read and
delete mail at home with Outlook 2007, some of those messages are
appearing unread in my Deleted Items folder when I connect at work
with Outlook 2003. They are also appearing as unread if I connect to
the webmail version of Exchange 2003. So they are not getting marked
as read from my home machine. I have tried running scanpst on my home
ost file but no change. Then I created a brand new ost file and let
everything sync back up from the server. Once again some messages are
appearing as unread on the server even though they are marked as read
at home.

I am running cached mode on both versions of Outlook. Does anybody
have any ideas what the problem might be? Is this an Exchange or
Outlook problem?

Thanks for any help you can offer me.

Are both outlook's open at the same time? If so, you shouldn't use cached
mode on both.

No, they are never open at the same time.
