read new word XML in MacOSX Word X ?

I have just received my first document in what I think is Word's new
XML format and I'd like to read it into Word X on my mac. After
searching these forums for any hints, there are mentions of a converter
program, but the topics were all over a month old so I couldn't reply
to them to ask about the converter. So, does this beastie exist or is
it still to be released ? Any other way of accessing these new format
files on a Mac ?

Thanks for any help. Jeff.

It's still to be released, since Word 2007 is a beta. My advice would be to
tell the person to resend the doc using the standard format (for Word 2003),
since only people running beta Word 2007 can open their doc.

Someone else may know if there is a different program you can use.

Thanks for that. I'll email them. I also tried using the Open Document
Format support within the latest version of NeoOffice but it didn't
seem to recognise it at all.

Bye Jeff.

If its true XML just for kicks have you tried a Web browser like
FireFox. It reads XML.

If it's "fixed", don't "break it"!

Hi Phillip and others,

The XML file format is really XML, but the file is automatically zipped
by Word when it was saved (a sneaky way to hide the fact that XML files
are actually larger, not smaller, than the old .doc, .xls and .ppa
proprietary formats).

I don't have a new format document around, but maybe Stuffit Expander
can extract the real XML from the new Word document.

Following up a bit.

I had a chance to save a document in Word's new format. As I expected I
was able to use Stuffit Expander to extract the components of the document.

Web browsers are able to display the Word document's text and the XML
code of the document.xml file that is contained in the package. They
don't pick up on the style information yet, however.
