Read only automatically resets in word 2007

The read only attribute resets in my documents in Word 2007 as I work on
them, and always show read only when I check the right click, properties for
the folders I keep my documents in, even as I uncheck and applied properties
previously.
I have to save my document under different names and close them to uncheck
and apply, the read only attribute several times a session.
What causes this and how do I disable this automatic read only?
