Read only behavior in MSP2003 WSS 2

Hi everyone - I am wondering what project is doing with the document in the
following scenario

I double click the link in a document library for a word document
the document opens in word and has [Read Only] after the file name
I make edits and then click close
Asks me if I want to save changes
opens the Shared Doc site it came from
and I click Save
File saves in the library

QUESTION - why does it say it is a read only file if it truly isn't? Or do
I have some settings that are askew?

Thank you
Kathleen

Hi Kathleen,

This is a guess, but I think this occurs because the file you are
opening is not a true file that exists on your local machine.

Word probably downloads the file to a temp location, and opens the
file in read only mode to prevent a save from replacing that temp
file. Instead, it handles the save as a special case
and saves it back to SharePoint.

There probably isn't a setting that changes the display of "read-only"
in the window title.

Again this is speculation on my part. You might get a more solid
answer in a word or SharePoint group.

Hope that helps,

Adam

Hi Adam - I think you are exactly right... it's confusing the user though.
Doesn't seem to be a work around though. Have you heard of any?

Kathleen,

I haven't heard of any work around. Again you might try a WSS group
though....
