Read-only documents won't open!

Hi,

I'm having a trouble with MS Word for Mac: 2004. Every time I go to open a
Read-only document, when I click "read-only" it only opens a blank document
instead of the actual file. I know that the files are not corrupt because
they will open on other computers. I am running Leopard and have MS Word
11.3.5 installed. Someone else tried reinstalling Office (I'm not sure
whether they did a full uninstall then reinstall or just reinstalled over
the top of the existing files - which I know would not help the problem). I
think before the reinstall it was happening while on v11.3.8 (but i'm not
positive about this). I have tried repairing disk permissions (twice).

Is there anything else anyone can suggest? I really need to be able to open
Read-only documents for work.
