Read only documents won't open

I have the following problem when opening a password protected document using Word from Office 97

The document resides on the server (peer to peer network) and has been set to require a password to open in full access mode, with read only recommended. On attempting to open the document the 'password' box pops up but on cliccking the 'read only' button the document doesn't open. If the full access password is entered the document opens correctly

The problem only happens on one pc on the network. The pc is running windows xp

Any suggestions
