Read Only Enterprise Custom Field?

Is it possible to make a task level enterprise custom field read only?

I will be populating it externally (and setting the appropriate
EXT_EDIT flags of course), but would like for the user to be unable to
edit the value when the column is viewed in Project 2003.

The short answer is NO.

If you would like to display the value and keep casual users from
accidentally or ignorantly changing it, then display another custom field
that uses a formula to reference the field (not displayed) where the actual
value is kept.
