Read Only Error

We have a site running several of our Access applications (front end
is 2003 mde, backend is SQL Server 2005) on a Microsoft 2003
Server . All but 2 pc's can run the applications correctly, 2 come up
with a read only error when they login to the applications.

Both Application (mde ) and Database are located on the server.

Of the 2 PC that have this error , one runs office 2007 (XP Operating
system) and the other runs Office 2003 (Vista Operating system).

We also have another site that has a PC that has been running our
applications for 4 yrs without a problem, all of a sudden it is coming
up with the same read only error. If the person goes to another PC
and logs into the application (Wrokgroup security), she can run the
application correctly.

Could someone please shed some light on the possible causes for this
error.

Both Application (mde) and Database are located on the server.

In this case, it appears as if all users are sharing a common FE file. Each
user should have their own copy of the front-end application installed on
their local hard drive, so that no two users are ever accessing the same .mde
FE file.

That is correct we have the mde file located on the server, we have
used this set for at least 6 yrs now at 15 sites around the world and
have never had an issue with sharing. We have several sites that have
20 - 30 users accessing the same mde file every day and these sites
have not had any problems, performance or technical since the
applications were installed in 2003.

Hi Brian,

In that case, you've been extremely lucky. Perhaps the fact that you are
sharing a .mde file, instead of a .mdb file, has helped with your lucky
streak. However, I have personally heard a very well respected Project
Manager (PM), who was a member of the Access Development Team at Microsoft at
the time, state that sharing a common file is the number one cause of JET
database corruption. This was true several years ago, when the PM involved
made this statement, and I'm pretty sure it is equally valid today. As
always, YMMV (Your mileage may vary). In other words, if you have really
stable networks, perhaps you will not experience the corruption that can
result from sharing a single file.

Regarding the problem that you posted about, why don't you at least try
placing a copy of the .mde file on the local hard drive, at least for the two
users who are having problems. This may not clear up the issue, but it's
certainly worth eliminating as a possible cause.
