read-only errors

I am the author of a word doc and word performed an
illegal operation error. I had to close word, I then
restarted computer and now my document says that it is in
use by another user and can only be opened in read-only
mode. I did this and then tried deleting the old file
after I did a save as and I get access denied. How do I
fix this problem when the file is not in use by another
user?
