Read Only Fails Mac & PC clients

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Hi guys,
I have a PC with Office 2007 (SP2 applied) and a Mac with Office 2008 (all Updates applied

When I open a blank Workbook via a Windows Server on the PC first I get a Read Only dialogue box as expected when opening on the Mac client, but no matter what option I select (Read Only or Notify) Excel on the Mac fails with "Excel cannot Open this file - The file might have been damaged or modified from its original format.

But when I open the same workbook on the Mac first then open as read only on a PC it works fine.

I'm at a loss.... HELP!!
