read only folders preventing me from saving onto disk

i am new to office 2003. all of my programs seem to be locked on read only. when i look in tools properties attributes, the read only box has a green square in it. i change this to blank and it asks 'unset read only' i hit apply and when i look at the folder again, it has the green box again. i would really appreciate help as i have several files i want to save onto disk
