Read only for 1st opening only

How can I allow a user to open a Word document and make changes to it, but
force him/her to give it a new name so that the original document remains
entact (kind of like a template)? The new document he/she saves should not
have restrictions forcing him/her to rename it again.

Tools> Options - Security tab, Password to Modify (if your version of
Office/Word is prior to 2007). Password holders can revise the original, but
without the pw the file will open as Read Only. Users will be able to edit
but must save changes as a new document. The pw protection doesn't transfer
to the new file.

The obvious solution is to save it as a template? However if the document is
a work in progress and you need to save versions of the document, then you
need macros to do this. You cannot force your users to use the macros
contained in a document so education is the answer to that dilemma. As for
the versioning - see http://www.gmayor.com/save_numbered_versions.htm

I have a PDF document going out to 1000s of people with a number of Word and
Excel files associated with it. There are links throughout the PDF that open
those files. Each time one is opened from the PDF, it should be in its
original state. But, users need to be able to save their versions (modified
copies of the originals) in separate folders and make future modifications as
needed while keeping the original intact. I want to safeguard so people will
always have the original version.

Excel allows me to do this. I thought Word would be the same.
