Read Only Projects

Why do projects keep getting set to read only after I check them in?

This is causing me considerable grief as I do not know at which point it is
getting set to read only but I am certain it is not read only when I open the
project. I then spend a few hours making changes only to find I can’t save
them.

Any suggestions to address this problem?

I'm assuming 2007? If so, this is a bug, hopefully solved in SP1. worth
doing a search within this NewGroup for READ - there was a post yesterday
called Offline / Checkin Behaviour that describes the work arounds. Best
practise seems to be to select file | close rather than hitting the top right
hand corner X.

In addition to Ben's helpful insight about clicking File - Close to close
your projects, it sounds like your project is "stuck" in the Local Cache.
You can delete the copy from the Local Cache by clicking Tools - Local
Project Cache - Cleanup Cache. Click the Project Filter pick list in the
middle of the dialog and select the "Projects checked out to you" option.
Select your "stuck" project and then click the Remove from Cache button.
Close the dialog and then click File - Open. Double-click the "Retrieve the
list of all projects..." option and you will see a list of all of your
projects in the Project Server database. Select your project and open it,
and it should open in Read/Write mode. Hope this helps.

Thanks Dale and Ben, I do clear out the cache fairly regularly once I notice
the problem. However before I can delete the project cache I need to close
the project, I don’t want to close the project because I just spent 2 hrs
editing it and don’t want to lose the changes. Fortunately, this was a new
project which did not have any actual values, so I did Save As and saved it
with a new name.

I just find this incredibly annoying, and can’t wait for SP1, hopefully it
address my other major issue also (where my projects get completely scrambled
form time to time).

For the time being I will try the File-Close option to see if the results
are better.
