Read Only Word Documents

More and more frequently my Word documents randomly change to "Read Only"
files, preventing editing. Is changing the file name my only option?
Surely there is a way to prevent this. I browsed previous questions
regarding this problem but unable to find any that were answered. Thanks for
any help.
