read only

Hi isandearsoftheuniverse,

That depends on why they're read-only. Is it because you're accessing documents on a CD/DVD, or that have been copied from one? Or
is it because they've been saved with a 'read-only recommended' setting (see under File|Save As)?

Open Windows Explorer, select all the documents, right-click, select
Properties and clear the Read Only box.

This does not work for me. All my backup files are Read Only and
therefore useless. I cannot find a way to avoid the R/O in the first
place. I check the documents before I send them to the CD-RW and there
is no R/O showing but when sent to the CD-RW they become R/O.
There is much discussion about this and most of it I do not understand
or it will not work for me.
One Microsoft post even advised me to get into the Registry to fix the
problem. There is no way I am getting into the Registry.
What next?

Ralphael1,

Copy the files from the CD and onto your HDD, then use Windows Explorer as Terry suggested to remove the read-only attribute from
the HDD copies. Files on CDs/DVDs are always flagged as read-only.

Everything on a CD or DVD is Read Only. You failed to mention that
significant information. Copy to your HDD and then right-click and clear the
RO attribute.
