Read Receipt

confused

I sent an email the other to somebody who i regularly email. I have read
receipts turned on for all mails and normally the person reads my mail and i
then get read receipt before their response. However on this occassion the
person read the mail at 5pm and replied and i did not have a read receipt
until the next morning which said that it was read at 7.30am. How is this
possible...surely if i got a response at 5pm then that must have been the
time it was read??

Yes, but there is no guarantee on how long an email takes to get from place
to place. It crosses multiple servers. If one is slow, down, and the RR has
to be rerouted, it gets delayed. Many servers don't even process read
receipts. More than likely the RR got hung up in a queue somewhere.

I can understand that there might have been a delay in the read receipt
showing up in my inbox but i cant understand why the timing on it was off? It
was read 09th sept at 5 but on the receipt it said 10th sept at 7.30 am. Is
there someway to reply to an email before generating the read receipt ie
through preview pane or something?

Did they read and reply from outlook? Other mail clients may not honor the
RR request and the user marked it read in outlook in the morning.

I don't know how it is possible. But it is beyond your control, as are all
read receipts. In my case, none of my clients are set to respond to RR
requests, and my domain mail server is set to ignore them. So any number of
scenarios can be posited; none of which are satisfying to a person relying
on this unreliable RR feature.

The best course of action in this matter? Don't worry, be happy! ;)
