Read WordPerfect docs with Word 2004?

H

Heath Long

Um, this is probably impossible - but I wrote some important papers on
my old PC in WordPerfect that I now need to get into. (They are going
to form part of my dissertation.) I guess there's no easy way to read
them on my Powerbook with Word 2004, is there? I don't particularly
want to re-type them all.....

Thanks,

Heath Long

Hi Heath,

You can't do it natively in Word 2004, no. Your best bet is to get DataViz'
MacLink Plus (<http://www.dataviz.com/products/maclinkplus/>), but it's not
free. The best free option is to have someone save the WP files as RTF
(Rich Text Format), which Word can read. Or download a copy of WordPerfect
3.5 Enhanced, which is now free
(<http://acmfiles.csusb.edu/pub/Macintosh/Applications/Corel/Corel_WP_35e.se
a.bin>). You'll have to install the application in Classic and then you
should be able to save the files in RTF or Word.

Hope this helps.

Hiya Heath:

Beth's right. Or if you send me a direct email, I can give you another
option.

Cheers

John, I did send you a direct email.

Beth, in case anyone else is interested in the details of the process
you recommended - I did (successfully) download the WordPerfect, but I
couldn't figure out how to open the application. Actually, I couldn't
even figure out how to switch to the Classic Environment in order to
open the app. So, I wasn't even able to get the docs open in order to
save them in RTF. (I'm not very computer-savvy in general, and I'm a
new Mac user to boot - I apologize for not knowing how to do these
very basic-sounding things...)

Hi Heath,

To use Classic, you have to install OS 9.2.2, which you do from the Office
2004 installation CD that says "Additional Software" on it. Once you do
that, you'll be able to use Classic. If you're not ever going to need it
again, you might not want to bother, since John is going to help you out.

Not the Office 2004 installation CD. You install Classic from the OS 10.2 or
10.3 CDs or DVD. If your machine came with CDs it is on a separate
"Additional Software" CD, I think. If your machine came with an install DVD
it's on the DVD (maybe "Software Install and Restore"). If you have separate
OS 10.3 CDs it's on there somewhere (CD 3, I think).

OS X retail releases (not bundled with Macs) no longer include OS 9. OS
X 10.1 retail packages came with a 9.2.1 installer CD, but 10.2 and
later did not. Apple has a mail-in program for purchasers of 10.3 to get
9.2. See <http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/>.

In my Windows days, I used QuickViewPlus (file viewer) to convert from
WP > Word.

As many people were frustrated by the way Word "converted" WP documents
and started retyping, I found that opening the WP file in QVP gave me
the original formatting as intended. Then using copy/paste to Word did a
better job than opening the WP file in Word directly.

You may find a working demo of QVP on the net.
