Readability statistics in Microsoft Word 2002

After a spelling and grammar check, Word displays the readability statistics
for the document. However, these statistics are always wrong. It states that
there are only 2 words, 5 characters and 1 sentence in a large document. All
the other statistics read as "0". If you use the seperate Word Count tool, it
provides the right number of words and sentences etc. Why is this? What can
be done to fix this?
