Readability statistics

In earlier versions of Word, I was able to obtain readability
statistics without going through the recommended corrections in the
document. It seems to have disappeared in Word 2004 (11.2)-at least I
cannot find a way to turn off the corrections feature. I've gone into
preferences and unchecked everything except "readability statistics,"
but to no avail. Any help would be most welcome.

Thanks!

AFAIK in 2004 you need to run Spell Check in order to produce the stats.
Once the spelling errors are dealt with (corrected or ignored) running Spell
Check immediately produces the stats.

That's true now, but I used to be able to bypass Spell Check and get
the readability statistics immediately. I'm hoping to find out whether
there's a way to bypass the Spell Check in Word 2004

Let me rephrase my response - In Word 2004 there is no way to do so.

The only option offered in Word Help is by running Spell Check. I have also
taken a close look at all the commands in Tools>Customize in the hope it
could be added as a toolbar button or menu command... But couldn't even find
a listing for anything that was appropriate. You may want to look for
yourself - perhaps you'll have more luck.

Whether it can be called by VBA I don't know.

Hey LTA,

Perhaps what you're looking for is this:

Word | Preferences --> Spelling and Grammar

Under the "Grammar" section of the dialog, you'll see an option called "Show
Readability Statistics". As the description says, after you run a Grammar
check, the Readability Statistics dialog will appear with the info you're
looking for.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your reply, Jeffrey. I have no problem finding out how to
obtain readability statistics. What I'm trying to do is obtain them
without first having to have Word check my spelling and grammar. I used
to be able to do that in Word 5.1. If you're involved w/ Microsoft
Word, please ask them to restore that feature-the ability to simply
evaluate readability wo/ wading through the document.
