Reading layout useless for landscape docs

If a document has landscape pages, reading layout in word 2003 chops off the
right hand side of the document.

If a document has landscape pages it shouldn't come in trading mode by
default.

You can disallow Reading Layout for all docs with the appropriate check box
on the General tab of Tools | Options.
