Recent versions of Microsoft Word/Mac can't open WordPerfect
documents.

However, there are a bunch of ways to convert a WordPerfect document
to a MS Word document on your Macintosh. Here are the two most
popular ways:

1-Purchase MacLinkPlus from DataViz
http://www.dataviz.com/products/maclinkplus/index.html
and use it to convert your .wpd files to .doc files for use in
Microsoft Word. This, at first, might seem like the ideal solution,
but in practice, if your documents have complex formatting, the
MacLinkPlus translators can be disappointing.

2/3-Download AbiWord (free)
http://www.abisource.com/
or
NeoOffice (free)
http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php
and use one of them to open your documents and save them as .doc files
for use in Word (or continue using AbiWord or NeoOffice as your main
word processing application). Both of these programs use the same
exact translators, so it doesn't matter which you use.

I can send a long list of other options to whomever wants it.

Thanks for the tip However, Abi word for Mac is over 4 years old and was
designed when OX.2.8 was out. And, to get it is not Straight forward,
you have to look at fine print and click on link mentioning OSX
available in slightly out of date form. I've downloaded and installed
it. So I could have a WordPerfect to word Translation system.

For the benefit of others who read this, or find in future with
> Google/Bing ... how did you solve?
It was right under my nose in Word Help. File > Open > Enable: chose "Recover Text from any File". Voila! The file titles become solid; you can open them; and save them as Word documents.
