I would like to tell you some of my practical problems
faced due to poor Office Help in Office XP.
Case 1
Info Looking for: what general number format is
Product: Excel XP
Words typed in Search box: (meaning of) general number
(format), what general number format is
Search Result: cannot find a help topic of what I wish to
know
In fact, the answer which I want is indeed in a help doc
called:
- "About formatting worksheets and data"
But poor searcher cannot search it for me.
Case 2
Info Looking for: the definition of nonbreaking space
Product: Word XP
Words typed in Search box: non(-)breaking (space)
Word chosen in Index: nonbreaking space
Search Result: cannot find a help topic of what I wish to
know
In fact, the answer which I want is indeed in several
help docs when the term "non-breaking space" is written.
What you need is to click on the term, and their
definition will appear.
However I simply can't find it using the poor searcher
and index!
No glossary nor whole-text search in Office Help is a
cause of the problem.
Case 3
Info Looking for: What is the shortcut of XXX
Product: All Office XP
Words typed in Search box: XXX (shortcut key)
Search Result: cannot find a help topic of what I wish to
know
Very often, I need to know some shortcuts for some
actions (eg change case).
The best way to know their shortcuts are to perform a
search.
But since there is no "whole-text" search nor search
within document(s), there is no easy way for you to know.
PS: you can find some common shortcut keys (yes, only
common!) by pointing your mouse to the icons.
However it is only possible in Access & Word, not others
(eg Excel, Powerpoint)!!
Case 4
Info Looking for: What does the options mean in line-
spacing (eg single, double, at least)
Product: Word XP
What ScreenTip (by left-click and then select "What's
this?") explain: explain nothing about them
Words typed in Search box: line-spacing; single, double,
at least line-spacing
Search Result: cannot find a help topic of what I wish to
know
Please add explainations not only to the main options,
but also their sub-options // minor options.
