Recalculating issues

Hi There

I have suddenly got a spread sheet that (is quite a simple one!) will not
recalculate the simple addition equations I have in it. The only thing I can
do is go to the formula cell, click in it, then click in the formula at the
bar, then just hit return. I have recently put in 10.3.3 could this have
caused any problems?

Had this spread sheet going a couple of years it¹s a job cost/markup
arrangement and it always runs really well. Could I have turned off the auto
recalculation unintentionally (is that even optionally?)

As usual with all these mac.office forums, any advice gratefully received.

It probably should not. But it's not totally impossible
that this could be a side-effect. Did you "Repair the
Permission" after updating?

The manual/auto setting of the caculation is an
application-wide preference setting. So it can have been
set by a macro or some messing in the "Preferences".

The first thing to be is certainly to check in the
"Preferences/Calulation" pane to see set it back to "Auto".

Thanks Bernard

For some reason the prefs/recalculate was set to manual. This is strange as
I am not sure I have been into the prefs for excel in a couple of years -
hence didn't know the option was even there!

Appreciate your help.

Richard,

The auto/manual calculation option is a bit strange in Excel. As Bernard
points out, it is a global setting affecting all open workbooks, but it is
saved with the workbook. So, for example, if someone sent you a workbook
that was set to manual calculation, and you opened that one first in the
Excel session, and then opened your workbook in question, you would be I
manual calculation mode even though you did not change a preference. One
easy way to notice this, is the word "Calculate" in the status bar (assuming
a macro hasn't altered the status bar). When this word appears, Excel
realizes that it needs to recalculate. But has not done so.

Thanks Bob

Now I understand Bernard's comment about how the pref is saved - and I can
sort of figure out how it might have happened.

I have suddenly encountered a similar problem. Not only will simple
equations stop calculating, but the number formatting has become
inoperable. When I go to clear or re-set the number to general, a dialog box
comes up saying that the request is invalid and requies an integer or other
whole number value.

Today, the same message has started to turn up for other cell formatting
like borders.

I have already verified the auto-calc function in Excel preferences.

Any ideas?

I'm having a lot of trouble understanding what you are seeing. Can you
please describe the steps you are taking in more detail, like:
-Click in a cell to select it
-press the delete key
-etc.
