Receipt of email delays things

One thing I have noticed about my new Outlook 2003 that is getting
particularly annoying, is that whenever I have email coming in, my computer
stops doing anything else. I could be in the middle of typing, opening a
window or program, moving from one program window to another - doesn't
matter, it seems like the whole thing just comes to a standstill whenever
it's receiving messages. Now, I have Outlook set to retrieve every 2 mins
so that gets to be a real pain. I've searched, and searched, but cannot
find any setting anywhere that might indicate there is something I need to
switch on or off to stop it doing this. I never used to experience this
problem so don't know if it is an Outlook2003/Office 2003 issue or whether
it's something else. I have a computer that is only 2 years old, has over
500megs RAM, heaps of hard disk space and everything else works well when
Outlook is not retrieving email.

Anyone else experienced this? And more to the point, do you know the fix?

You should'nt set retrevial for less than 10mins as it may cause resource
problems. In any case Email is not an instantaneous media.

Thanks - but it was working fine with a previous version of Outlook and
since it has the option there to set it at 2 mins, that is what I've done -
for varying reasons with running an online business, I need to access emails
quickly.

However,if what you're saying is that Outlook2003 has an issue with setting
less than 10 mins, then perhaps I'll change it - is that what you're saying?

All versions of OL have issues with setting of less than 10 mins, the fact
you had no problems previously is simply good fortune.
That is not to say this is the cause of your issue, but you would certainly
need to alter your settings first.

Also as previously said email is not an instantaneous media, unlike
phone/fax, an email transport is considered successfull if it is delivered
within, I recollect, 72 hours. That according to the body that overseas
these things.

PS will they win, at the Oval that is?

Yes.
