Receive memory error when trying to open Word docs.

I had this problem a number of months ago with one individual's emails now
its everyone's *.doc attachments. When I try to open a Word Doc that someone
has sent as an Email attachment I receive the following message:

"There is not enough memory to open file "C:\Documents and
Settings\Sean\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\3GMYS2WY\Michael Hoffman Resume.doc". Close your document,
close other programs, and then try again

WPS then opens to a blank/new document screen and is fully functional..
There aren't any other programs open, my Temp file memory has been expanded
to 10,000 MB and my Norton anti-virus plug-in for Office was been turned off
several months ago (its still off). This problem happens even with small
files of only 20 KB. Word works fine when I open it or a document through the
exe or explorer. Its only email attachments that cause this problem. I am
using XP Home version with SP2 installed and MSN v9.0. The email comes
through Hotmail. Any suggestions as to why its only attachments that have
this problem and how I can solve this issue?
Thanks

Thanks for the answer. Unfortunately saving it doesn't help. I still receive
the same memory message if I save it to the hard drive first even after
rebooting the system. These docs have been saved by my friends on 95, 97 and
XP so I'm not sure what setting I may need to change

My guess is that the documents are becoming corrupt during transmission. If
you email them back to your friend, is he able to open the attached document
again?

Try opening one (after saving to your local HDD) using the Recover Text from
Any File option: does that work? Which version of Word are you using and
what servicepacks are installed?

I can open it on my hard drive if I change the extension to .TXT but there is
coding showing up at the beginning and end of the message. If I send it back
to them they can open it. I also tried forwarding it in the *.doc format to
my Yahoo email address-no problems opening any of them. I know that this
isn't a Hotmail support group but any suggestions concerning settings or
filters in Explorer or Hotmail that might be causing this? Could it be a
template problem where Hotmail is looking for a specific one and Yahoo isn't?
I did modify my word template for different page margins and fonts. I am
using XP with service pack 2 installed. Works is v 6.0.

Thanks for the help

Thanks again. Unfortunately I was in error when I stated that it works in
Yahoo. I can open and view the document through them but if I try to save the
attachment I get the same error message concerning insufficient memory that I
get with Hotmail. The problem must be in one of my internet settings or Word
settings or a selected options somewhere on my system but I don't know where
to begin to find it.
