My wife and I use both of these programs and we are suddenly unable to
send
email. I checked with our ISP and everything seems fine. They suggested
we
contact Microsoft. Anyone have a suggestion? Here is the error message
I
get
in Outlook Express:
An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'pop-server.ca.rr.com', Server:
'smtp-server.ca.rr.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '421
mta16.adelphia.net connection refused from [76.169.14.102]', Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 421, Error Number: 0x800CCC67
If neither application works, it isn't going to be a problem with that
application.
Based on the error message, the server you're trying to send through
doesn't
want mail from you.
Probably best to call them and tell them the error message, tell them
which
ISP you're connecting to and what SMTP server you're trying to connect to
and see if that should work. And, if it should, find out why they are
refusing the connection from your IP address.
Thanks for your quick response. If by "them" you meant the person I am
sending to, well then I can tell you it is either my wife or me. We were
sending to others and got this error, so we also tested it by sending it
each
other. Again, the same error message.
She called the "Geek Squad" for advice and they think it could be a virus.
It doesn't seem that way to me, but I'm no expert. Does that sound like
something youve seen before?
By them, I mean the ISP. When you talked to them, did they tell you why you
got the error, or did they just say 'No idea why you got the error'?
Are you connected to the same ISP as provides your email?
It does not sound like a virus.
It sounds like the mail server you are talking to is saying that it won't
accept mail from you. Seriously. That's *exactly* what the error you
pasted in says.
"mta16.adelphia.net connection refused from [76.169.14.102]"
mta16.adelphia.net is likely another name for whatever smtp server you're
trying to connect to.
76.169.14.102 is the ip address on your DSL/Cable Modem.
That server, for some reason, won't accept a connection from your IP
address.
It isn't an Outlook issue. It isn't an Outlook Express issue. It isn't a
virus.
It is, however, extremely sad that customer service has fallen to this
point. Call Adelphia/Road Runner back and ask them to walk you through
using telnet to send a message through their SMTP server. If the front line
person can't help you, ask to be escalated to someone who can, because, if
telnet won't work (and they have you telnet to the exact same address and
port as you have set up in outlook), then Outlook won't work.
