Receiving e-mails in various formats without associated programs?

I have received e-mails from business associates (work schedules in
Excel/.XLS) and from trusted friends (in Power Point/.pps) but cannot open
and read them. I have MS Office Pro 2003 on my system, but receive, "This
file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.
Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."
Can someone walk a "newbie" through this process?
